Rio de Janeiro is one of Brazil’s most famous cities, set between dramatic mountains, tropical forest and the Atlantic Ocean. Its name means “River of January” in Portuguese. Portuguese explorers arrived in the area in January 1502 and, believing Guanabara Bay to be the mouth of a large river, named it Rio de Janeiro. Rio grew rapidly because of trade, gold and coffee, and from 1763 to 1960 it served as Brazil’s capital before Brasília took over that role.
