Customs and Duty-Free Allowances – Brazil

When arriving in Brazil by air, travellers may bring personal belongings for their own use without paying customs duty, provided the nature and quantity of the items are appropriate for the journey. New goods, gifts and other purchases brought into Brazil are subject to a duty-free allowance of USD 1,000 per person. This allowance is individual and may not be combined between partners or family members.

Duty-free allowance when entering Brazil by air:

  • New goods and purchases up to a total value of USD 1,000 per person
  • Up to 12 litres of alcoholic beverages
  • Up to 200 cigarettes or 10 packets of 20
  • Up to 25 cigars or cigarillos
  • Up to 250 g of tobacco
  • Personal clothing, toiletries and other reasonable items for use during the trip are exempt
  • Books, brochures and periodicals are exempt
  • Keep receipts for any valuable new items or purchases

Purchases made at an overseas duty-free shop, including duty-free purchases made aboard the aircraft, form part of the USD 1,000 baggage allowance. Travellers purchasing goods at the duty-free shop at their first airport of arrival in Brazil receive an additional duty-free allowance of USD 1,000, subject to the applicable quantity limits. Alcohol and tobacco allowances only apply to travellers aged 18 years and older.

Restricted and Prohibited Items

Brazil has strict controls on certain food, plant and animal products. To avoid delays or confiscation, guests should not carry fresh fruit, vegetables, plants, seeds, meat, dairy products or other animal and plant products unless these have been authorised and declared.

Please remember:

  • Do not carry luggage or packages for another person.
  • Counterfeit and pirated goods are prohibited.
  • Firearms, ammunition and firearm replicas are restricted.
  • Prescription medication should be kept in its original packaging.
  • Carry a copy of the prescription or a doctor’s letter, particularly for controlled medication.
  • Cash exceeding the equivalent of USD 10,000 must be declared.
  • Goods exceeding the duty-free allowance must be declared and may be taxed at 50% of the amount above the allowance.
  • Travellers with items to declare must complete Brazil’s Electronic Traveller’s Declaration of Goods (e-DBV) and use the “Goods to Declare” customs channel.
